La Gazetta – Paris

La Gazetta – “Food rocks in art deco style”
Chef: Petter Nilsson

La Gazetta in the 12th district in Paris is one of those restaurants being talked about a lot. Is  it because they were mentioned in the food column of the NY times? Anyhow being honored with a label of good value menu, this with a reference to Le Chateaubriand, Frenchie, Rino…, made our must visit a fact!

The Swedish chef, Petter Nillson, is on the watch list of nearly all Paris’ foodies and after his participation in the famous “Cook it Raw” tour amongst the world leading creative chefs, he gained a lot of respect.

The restaurant is located close to the Bastille area and luckily not in a tourist area but more a place for bustling locals. The jazzy Art Deco themed décor was surprisingly warm. After previous visits to Le Chateaubriand & Frenchie we expected more crammed tables and a bit less style. The restaurant serves simple lunches but for dinner they go on the creative tour with set 5 or 7 course menu. We call it budget gourmet as the 5 course is offered at 42€ while the 7 course is 56€. Don’t expect the traditional food here, this place is for food adventurers!

We ordered the 5 course menu as the 2 additional dishes did not please our taste, Ris de veau & goat milk dishes. The first dish was in fact an appetizer and was already served just after having had our glass of Champagne. The dish with mackerel, parsley, leeks, beurre noisette &  crumbs of milk was creative but missed for me a bit of deepness in the flavors.

The second course was a nice degustation of Langoustine, cooked celery, lychee and a consommé. Although the small sizes of the langoustine lobster it was an excellent combination with surprisingly pleasant flavors.

Before going to the meat dish we were served a Charlottes purée with chard, olives, almonds & preserved lemon. A pairing made from simple products which were ok but definitely we were not blown away.

As a main dish we have been served the lamb from the Pyrenees with Jerusalem artichokes, prunes and coffee. The Jerusalem artichoke was perfect, the lamb tasted well but too much fat for us.

Dessert time with two plates, first the chocolate cake with pears and then the semifreddo of blood orange & carrots with meringues. Nice dishes for a perfect closure.

Regarding the wine list we have not being advised but the chosen white wine: Ansienne Cordonnerie 2009, viognier and red: Fitou Oufti, 2010, Mas des Caprices Pierre where excellent and good value choices. The service is not of a top level but correct. Some dishes where announced but we missed a bit attention or a special touch.

La Gazetta serves good food in a nice atmosphere, worth a visit for a creative food evening but to classify La Gazetta in Bistronomie I missed this little extra.

Tried La Gazetta last week, we were pleasantly suprised. The service was very friendly, the food suprising, we ate things we would not normally have chosen but when you don’t have the choice you suddenly become more adventurous. We felt the sometimes unusual combinations worked well, the only dish we were a little less sure of was the goat’s cheese ice cream. The atmosphere was casual, the only down side was that we felt there were quite a few tourists and very few natives.
Overall experience was good, we would go again, and very good value for money.
