Foodies visiting Modena in Italy usually have Osteria Francescana on top of their list. One location they should never miss to make their Emilia experience complete is Hosteria Giusti. Viva la mamma!Hosteria Giusti - Modena

The little restaurant Hosteria Giusti was founded in 1989 by renovating the old original slaughterhouse for pork and goose. Owner Adriano Morandi created a small Hosteria with only four tables, open for lunch only. His wife, Laura Galli, is the kitchen chef and today her children Matthew and Cecilia are assisting her. This family-run Hosteria honors still founder Nano Morandi (rip) and exposes the historical tradition of Modena. Dishes served in Hosteria Giusti preserve a lot of grandmothers’ recipes.Hosteria Giusti - Modena

The restaurant is located behind the Salumeria Giusti, a beautiful delicatessen shop also run by the family. At noon the shop closes, as this is the time they focus on serving an excellent and traditional lunch. The shop it selves dates back from the 17th century and showcases the best artisan products from the region. The Giusti family has run the Salumeria since 1605.Hosteria Giusti - Modena

The enogastronomia is a small jewel of the finest foods of the region. Today the Salumeria Giusti offers its customers the best selections salamis and prosciuttos, olive oils, amazing homemade pasta, hanging Parma hams which are often cured from one to three years, the best Parmigiano Reggiano and delicious aged Balsamic vinegar from a personal production.Hosteria Giusti - Modena

Hosteria Giusti - ModenaThe restaurant is accessible through a tiny passage in the back of the store that winds past the kitchen to tables in the old storage room of the slaughterhouse where hams had hung to cure, and the hooks are still driven deep into the overhead beams. Another entrance is the backdoor in a quiet alley off Via Emilia.Hosteria Giusti - Modena

Guests entering the restaurant will be seated in a rustic setting with exposed beams and terracotta tile floor. The linen tablecloths, crystal glasses and stylish plates provide elegance while the warm welcome and friendly service is key to the success of Hosteria Giusti. Individual reservations are only taken for lunch as the restaurant opens only for groups from 16 up to 24 persons during evenings.Hosteria Giusti - Modena

Just entering this place makes you already smile. You just realize directly that Hosteria Giusti is the right place for fresh and pure Emilia Cuisine. Off course the restaurant serves a nice selection of pasta dishes like Verrigni, linguini with raw tuna sauce or tagliatelle with saffron and cheek veal. We started with one of the best foie gras dishes ever tasted. A millefeuille was made of fried eggplant slices, foie gras and lardo di colonnata (18€).Hosteria Giusti - Modena

Zucchini flowers were stuffed with mozzarella and anchovies and served in tempura style. This was paired with an intense jelly of fresh tomatoes (14€).Hosteria Giusti - Modena

As a main course we took half portion of the suckling pig in room temperature with onions sauce and aged balsamic vinegar (12€).Hosteria Giusti - Modena

This was followed with the fried ‘cotechino’ sausage with zabaglione. We found it a very interesting combination having the fried meat together with a zabaglione sauce.Hosteria Giusti - Modena Hosteria Giusti - Modena

The dessert was less surprising with a homemade tart with cherry jam (10€).23350612244_5f103fb7c3_z

We had a great lunch stopover in this charming little restaurant Hosteria Giusti. A recommendation for every traveler to Modena and for sure you will bring home some products from their shop. Upfront reservations are strongly advised. Be-Gusti!
