COMERç24*: “Michelin stared tapas in Barcelona’s El Born”

Chef: Carles Abellan

After I had been reading hours on other food blog colleagues in order to prepare our first Barcelona trip, I decided that we had to include Comerç24 to the program. Reading the article from the Belgian taste buds gave it an extra dimension and luckily we were able in getting a seat.

The great Spanish chef Carles Abellan was for years the sous chef of Adria Ferran in his various projects, including El Bulli. When returning to Barcelona he decided to open his own restaurant, Comerç24. His aim is to offer great cooking in a contemporary setting at reasonable prices. The Chef’s signature is a tapas selection with a little molecular gastronomy touch.

The restaurant is located in the heart of the trendy El Born district, in the street of the chocolate museum. The menu does not offer starters or main courses but only a list of gastronomical tapas. When ordering the Chef’s menu you will get a walk through the à la carte menu.

One of the most important aspects for a great dinner start: bread-butter-salt-olive oil. In Comerc2’ they understood the message in serving 4 different kind of olive oils going from soft to spicy with a great variety of freshly baked bread.

After dinner we received a nice memory menu with our personal a la carte details and chosen wines and champagnes printed. Although neighbour tables order the same tapas menu not all dishes are the same. The chef works on inspiration and guest preferences. We really linked it a bit to a previous year experience in Paris with “Agapé Substance”. Also in Belgium today the newly opened Cuines,33 has these looks! I really love these creative tapas concepts.

Today Carles Abellan is the driving force behind Group Projectes 24 which includes in addition to Comerç24 also Tapas24, Catering24 and restaurant Bravo24 in the W Hotel.
